Star Speakers Contest 2019

The Star Speakers Contest showcases the fun aspects of learning English and is also a great opportunity for students to polish their public speaking skills and develop their confidence when speaking in a public setting. Prizes are awarded to young individuals who demonstrate the highest levels of proficiency in their English speaking skills in each of the following level categories: Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers.

The first Star Speakers Contest was held in 2018. The last Star Speakers Contest has ended on 6 July 2019. As an annual event, Star Speakers Contest 2020 will open for application from March 2020. Please check back later for more information.

Cambridge English: Young Learner Exams

To be eligible to participate in the Star Speakers Contest, children are required to tale the Cambridge English: Young Learner Exams. The YL Exams is designed to assess the English language skills of children at three assessment levels (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers) for children aged between 4 to 12.

Important Dates

  • Online application period: 20 March – 17 May 2019
  • First Round contestants notified: 23 May 2019
  • First Round: 1 June 2019

The Prizes (for each level)

  • Grand Prize: Prize value at HK$2,000, one trophy
  • 1st Runner-up: Prize value at HK$1,500, one trophy
  • 2nd Runner-up: Prize value at HK$1,000, one trophy
  • Merit Award: Prize value at HK$500, one medal
  • “My Favourite Performance” Award: Prize value at HK$500, one medal

All participants will receive a certificate.

Eligibility

Students who have registered for or have taken a Cambridge English Young Learners exam with the British Council are eligible to enter. We can only accept a limited number of entries for each level of the competition. Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Topic materials

There will be a different topic for each level (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers), and new topics will be set for the Grand Finale. All topics will be set by the British Council. In both the first round and the Grand Finale, each contestant will be speaking on the same given topic as all other contestants competing at their respective level.

Finalists Selection

Ten finalists per level will be shortlisted (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers) by the judging panel from the British Council and Cambridge.

'My favourite performance' online voting

The online voting period starts from 09.00 on 6 June 2019 to 18.00 on 5 July 2019. For more details, please refer to the ‘Online Voting’ tab.

The Grand Finale and prize-giving ceremony

The Grand Finale will be held on 6 July at the British Council’s office in Admiralty. There will be three different contests (one for each level), and a prize-giving ceremony will be held at the end of each contest.

Judging Criteria

Content

  • Language: Is the standard of English good? Is a good range of language used?
  • Organisation: Is there a clear introduction, body and ending?
  • Timing: Does the performance meet the specified time requirements?

Style

  • Voice: Does the contestant speak clearly and project their voice well?
  • Body Language: Does the contestant maintain good posture and eye contact? Does the contestant use facial expressions and hand gestures?
  • Enthusiasm: Does the contestant show confidence and enthusiasm for the topic?

The First Round Contest was held on 1 June 2019 at the British Council’s office in Admiralty. The Contestants demonstrated high level of English proficiency in public speaking. The British Council is pleased to announce the ten finalists per level for the Grand Finale. The Grand Finale and Prize-giving Ceremony will be held on 6 July 2019 at the British Council’s office in Admiralty.

3. Announcement of First Round contestants:

  • All applicants will be notified of their application status by 23 May 2019.

4. First Round

The First Round contest will be held on 1 June 2019 at the British Council’s office in Admiralty.

5. Topics

Topic and suggested speaking time by level:

  • Starters: My Super Puppy (3 mins)
  • Movers: A Magical Day (4 mins)
  • Flyers: An Unforgettable Adventure (5 mins)

Contestants can compose and tell a story based on the given topic and bring props to their performance if they wish! This is a Contest for them to enjoy being on stage and have fun!

6. Announcement of finalists

  • Ten (10) finalists per level (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers) will be shortlisted by the judging panel from the British Council and Cambridge Assessment English.
  • The finalists will be announced on this site and notified via email on 5 June 2019.
  • Details of the topics that will be used in the Grand Finale, along with related event details will be included in the notification email.

7. The Grand Finale and prize-giving ceremony

  • The Grand Finale will be held on 6 July at the British Council’s office in Admiralty. There will be three different contests (one for each level), and a prize-giving ceremony will be held at the end of the event.

8. Parental Consent Form

All applications submitted by the contestants’ attending institutions must obtain parental consent prior to their students registering to participate in the contest. Click here to download parental consent form.

9. Photographs and recordings

Parents/guardians must sign a consent form upon arrival at the First Round of the Star Speakers Contest 2019 on 1 June 2019. The form must be signed in order for the participant to compete.

What is the Star Speakers Contest 2019?

Time to demonstrate your English ability! The Star Speakers Contest 2019 aims to showcase the role that fun out-of-school activities can play in learning English. Prizes will be awarded to young individuals who demonstrate the highest levels of proficiency in their English speaking skills.

Eligibility

1. Who is eligible for the Star Speakers Contest?

The Participant must:

  • be a permanent resident of Hong Kong
  • have taken a Cambridge English Young Learners test (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers) with the British Council (on or after 1 May 2018), or have registered to take a Cambridge English Young Learners test (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers or A2 Flyers) with the British Council in the future.

  • We can only accept a limited number of entries for each level of the competition. Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

2. I took a Cambridge English Young Learners test with the British Council before 1 May 2018. Can I apply to participate in the Star Speaker Contest?

No. The Star Speakers Contest 2019 is for students who took their exam with the British Council on or after 1 May 2018 only.

3. Can I apply for the Star Speakers Contest if I have registered for a Cambridge Young Learners test but have not yet taken it, or if I am currently waiting for my Young Learners test result?

Yes, absolutely!

4. I didn’t take my Young Learners tests at the British Council or a British Council-attached Cambridge English Assessment centre. Can I still apply?

No. As the Star Speakers Contest is organised by the British Council and Cambridge English, it is essential that you took your Young Learners tests with us.

Yes. There will be one given topic per level (Pre A1 Starters, A1 Movers and A2 Flyers) and new topics will be set for the Grand Finale. In both the first round and the Grand Finale, each contestant will receive the same given topic as all other contestants competing at their respective level. All topics will be set by the British Council.

7. Where can I find the topic materials?

Topic materials are now available at the Application tab.

8. When will the topic materials for the Grand Finale be available?

The topic materials for the Grand Finale will be published on this website after the finalists are announced. Finalists will also receive an email notification with details of the topics that will be used in the Grand Finale.

First Round

9. When and where will first round of the contest be held?

The first round will be held on 1 June 2019 at the British Council’s office in Admiralty. Further event details will be included in the notification email sent to applicants who have met all the eligibility criteria.
